Greenville Community Garden

Community gardens sometimes seem like they don’t really exist or that they're just something you hear about on the news. You’d be surprised to know just how many community gardens and orchards can be found throughout our communities close to home. In this blog series, we will visit some of the community gardens and orchards found within North Carolina, and discuss their importance and ways you can get involved in your community.

The first community garden and orchard we will visit is close to home, right in Greenville, NC. ECU students and staff have worked closely to organize this community garden and help it thrive within the community. The garden is located at 209 Stancill Drive, and they “hope to make something to be proud of, something to let us give back to our community, and something to get us out and working with our hands.” They have frequent volunteering opportunities in order to work on upkeep of the garden (weeding, planting, picking vegetables, etc…). They also work closely with the Love A Sea Turtle (LAST) student group, whose mission is youth leadership and stewardship targeted at the environment.

Community gardens, like this one in Greenville, are a great way to get out of the house and work hands-on to create something. Whether it is weeding, planting, or picking food, by the end of the day you will feel like you have done something meaningful. It is a great family activity, especially with leisure opportunities lacking with COVID-19 restrictions, there is no perfect time like the present to get back outdoors and enjoy working in nature. It is gardens like these that have inspired our quest to create our own garden on ECU’s campus for students, faculty, and the community.
