American Forests

As a society it is important to discuss the issues facing us and our world, for example: climate change. However, it is also important for us to note the work that many individuals and communities are doing to combat these issues. In this series, we will be looking at non-profits that are working to solve some aspect of climate change. Hopefully their triumphs will encourage you to support other endeavours in your area or around the world!

Climate change is a broad issue, with many different concepts falling under its domain. For example, when people talk about solving climate change they may be talking about water conservation, or increasing biodiversity, or even recycling, etc.... Which leaves room for thousands of different types of climate change fighting non-profit organizations, so let’s dive in:

Today I am going to focus on American Forests, a non-profit organization dedicated to reforesting the United States, and protecting trees around the country.

American forests is one of the oldest non-profits in America, being founded in 1875! Their deep foundations have allowed them to do incredible work, even allowing them to create the U.S. Forest Service. But their job doesn’t stop there. The American Forests organization has big plans for the future. They have pledge that by 2030:

  • they will have planted 4 BILLION trees across North America (using sustainable practices in choosing trees/location)

  • they will have raised every underserved community to a passing Tree Equity Score

  • they will help 100,000 people enter jobs in forestry

These goals may seem huge, but with the help of organizations and individuals across the country, they will without a doubt reach their goals.

It is non-profits like these that we, at the Edible Landscape Initiative, strive to become. It would be easy for us to say that climate change is a problem that no one person can solve, but it would be wrong of us not to do our part anyways. We believe that we can make a difference one orchard at a time, and we hope that you will stick with us as we work towards our goals.

We cannot make change unless we work together, so I hope that this series helps you see the change that people are making all across the country; and I hope you feel empowered to help us make change alongside them!
