Shopping Local

Updated: Oct 22, 2020

One of the most common and most prolific sources of pollution is big chain corporations. In order to sustain their hundreds of locations worldwide, they turn to relaxed production practices to save money leading to tons of pollution yearly. One of the biggest things we can do as consumers to fight back against their destructive behavior is to shop locally and shop sustainably.

By showing support for local businesses, you can help support eco-friendly practices and help local community members provide for their family. Shopping local does not just stop at things like clothes, however. Shopping in places like farmers markets can be extremely beneficial as well. By refusing to support large farms that produce tons of food at the cost of the environment, we can provide food for ourselves while still showing that we do not agree with the practices of big companies and corporations.

Moving forward, we here at Edible Landscape Initiative encourage you to look for as many local options before going to a chain store. Finding these options can be as simple as looking up "Locally owned _____ in Greenville, NC" or whatever city you reside in. This way you support your neighbors and support green habits by acting in the best interest of our environment.
