Passion for the Environment: Jonathan

I was one of the original 7 members of the edible landscape initiative. We were all put in this group because of our passion for the environment, and everyone’s concern and dedication were evident from the beginning. As we progressed and developed our idea, I fell in love with the prospect of helping our community through something as simple as planting some trees. As we moved forward, we lost and gained some members, but everyone had and still has that same drive and desire. Even after a year and a half, we still have the goal of bringing our community together through the environment, and it is truly an incredible thing.

The reason I am so passionate about our project is because I believe that nature is an incredibly important part of our everyday life, whether we know it or not. Because of this connection, it is my unwavering view that we should do all we can to protect the world and the beauty around us. In recent years, climate change

has begun to make irreversible change to the world as a whole. The fear that this realization has brought me is one of my biggest driving factors in wanting this project to succeed. Obviously, I realize that our 10-15 trees and various plants cannot make a measurable change in the problem that is climate change. However, I do think that enough small actions can make a world of difference. If our movement to plant a small orchard inspires other students or communities to do the same, perhaps we can make a real difference in a very real problem.

I want to extend a sincere thank you to everyone who has helped us along the way, including old group members, advisors, mentors, teachers, and everyone in between. Your help has been invaluable, and I want to ensure that your contributions and willingness to offer a hand are not forgotten. But we are not done yet. We still have a way to go, but I am excited to see where this project can take us!
